八ヶ岳美術館ではこのたび、写真展「Side Stories: 建築と喪失」を開催いたします。写真家・アバロス村野敦子は、阪神淡路大震災で倒壊した祖父・村野藤吾の自邸への追憶を起点に、それまで撮影してきた建築の写真群(現存しない建物を含む)を、自身の「体験」のイメージとして再構築しています。建築は一目で全容を把握することが難しく、またある時代を人とともに歩むという意味で時間的です。自らの「人生の出来事」として祖父の建築をまなざす写真家は、「記録」のイメージとしてではなく、建築との対話の表れとして写真を捉えます。それは現在の一瞬を平面化する写真の限界を自覚しつつも、この現在を未だ見ぬ誰かに受け取ってほしいという期待とともに、様々なる物語を生みまた失われていく建築に向き合い続けた痕跡です。こうした写真を通して「建築の本当の当事者とは誰なのか」を問い直すアバロス村野敦子の作品を、村野藤吾が設計した建築空間のなかでご覧いただきます。

Photographer Atsuko Murano of Avalos begins her work by reminiscing about her grandfather Togo Murano's house, which collapsed in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. She reconstructs her collection of architectural photographs (including those of buildings that no longer exist) as images of her own "experience."
Viewing her grandfather's architecture as an "event in her own life," the photographer sees photography not as a "record," but as an expression of dialogue with architecture.

While acknowledging the limitations of photography in flattening a single moment, her photographs are a testament to her continued engagement with architecture that creates and then disappears, harboring the hope that someone yet to see this present moment will receive it.
Through these photographs, Atsuko Murano of Avalos re-examines "who the true stakeholders in architecture are," and her work will be presented within an architectural space designed by Togo Murano.
